No irony, no hipster posing. Said The Whale's music is witty and smart and artful and soulful. They are the sound of Vancouver's perpetually grey skies and snow topped mountains and the Lions Gate Bridge. The sound of being trapped by water on three sides and the Coastal Range on the fourth. The sound of laying on your back in Stanley Park on a warm summer day watching the clouds. The sound of being twenty-something and free and heartbroken.Said The Whale is one-part Brian Wilson, one-part Nick Cave, a dash of the Shins, sprinkled with the Decemberists. Leave out the world of weary woe, shake, pour into your favorite legion glass and enjoy. They're a young band heading out into the world with a sound of their own." ~ Written by Rob Slack

Visit home page:http://www.myspace.com/saidthewhale

Alternative Music

SOULLESERA (formerly Why We Live)

Grunge / Alternative / Rock

Why We Live Why we live, a group that in 2007 started out with no real direction and no answer as to what lay ahead, began a path with a sole purpose, and a new dedication to the reconstruction and recreation of the Grunge era. But with more influences then Nirvana and Alice in Chains under their belt including: Led Zepplin, Ozzy Ozbourne, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Sublime, Stone Temple Pilots, and yes even metal acts such as Pantera, Metallica and Slayer, the then Losing Grip couldn’t achieve their goal without something more than grunge coming out of it. And now with a mix of Grunge, Rock, and Alternative, Why We Live sits poised to make a statement on a music genre without enough egde in it. After a bitter break up with his former band, a hard hitting metal vocalist from a small, unknown band in central British Columbia, decided to take a different approach on the music he was creating. Most of the people close to him and the fans, all new frontman Shane Thomas, as an edgy metal screamer, but it was his song writing and natural singing voice that caught the attention, of now drummer Errol Hug. Errol Hug had also grown up in a small town in Central B.C. , but had spent most of his music career as a singer and lead guitarist in his own band, a local cover band by the name of Fatty Lumpkin. Errol and Shane had met at a show at which Fatty Lumpkin and Shane’s then band Killing Stone, had been playing together. After a friendship had grown between the two Errol had brought up an idea to which Shane later entertained, of keeping the image but dropping the metal and start singing. Still, with a promising out look and new direction to their music, the two needed a bass player to finish the equation, and turned to long time friend Mike Winter. Mike’s positive attitude, love for playing bass and natural promotional skills were exactly what “Losing Grip’ had needed to get the band out of the attic and into the music scene. After promising gigs, and obtaining a following of loyal fans over the two year spread, the group had a decision to make. The decision was whether to stay in an area with no potential and no where to play, or head to the city in search of fame and prosperity. The band realized what they had to and after an inspired name change Why We Live has come to reclaim the music scene, whether it’s a hard hitting Rock type such as ‘Give it Away’ a soft ballad in ‘My Mother Earth’ or a classic grunge style piece with ‘Oops’, which clearly wasn’t a mistake, the trio is ready to recapture the glory days of Rock.

Visit home page: http://www.myspace.com/wwlive

Tele

Rock / Alternative / Electro

Coming from Winnipeg, MB. An epic fusion of ethereal keyboards and yearning vocals, Tele are a band best heard loud. Echoing British acts such as Radiohead, the electro-rock quartet makes despondency oh-so-listenable. Note to the kids in white belts: this is what emotional music is supposed to sound like.
Why? The eardrum-shattering quartet from the 'Peg have racked up quite the rep as being on the city's most killer live acts. ~ Chart Magazine

Visit home page: http://www.myspace.com/tele

Prairie Dance Club

Alternative / Rock / Country

Prairie Dance Club is a blend of alt country Canadiana with heavy sonic undertones. First
it was all about MySpace, then Facebook came along
and stole the show, then Twitter and so they rise
and fall.

You need good strategies to deal with social networks
in order to leverage them for maximum advantage
for your career and business.

I give you these 3 strategies which I think you
should keep in mind when it comes to your web
music marketing...

1 - Be Present...

Obscurity is your enemy, make sure you are seen
in all the right places. Yes, this means you'll
create profiles on web sites such as Facebook,
Myspace, Twitter, Last.fm, YouTube and also on
sites more specific to your genre or niche.

You realize there is nothing worse than a "ghost
town" profile last updated over two months ago
and which shows no real sign of activity.

You can therefore see why you'll have to spend
time to update all these profiles and communicate
with the users on the different sites, or get
someone to do it for you.

You can use a service such as Ping.fm to update
multiple social networks from one central location.
You can also use FriendFeed.com or SocialThing.com
to track the different networks you're active
on.

2 - Don't Push, Pull...

You won't get far with traditional advertising
and marketing methods on the web. You know the
type of advertising where you basically scream
or flash your message anywhere you can in the
hopes that you may distract the already over-distracted
masses with your product.

You want to rather build relationships with your
potential tribe members and turn them into active
supporters of you and your music. So...

... be authentic, be honest, interact with your
visitors as much as possible and over-deliver
on value with the music and the other content
you provide on your web site. You want to also
give tools such as "share this page" widgets to
help your supporters spread the word about your
music.

Word of mouth is easy to create when your music
is good, you are present and open and your web
site is often updated with lots of quality content.
People will share things they enjoy with friends
and tell others how much they like you when you
are nice to them. You can not buy word of mouth.

You cannot avoid word of mouth when you offer
outstanding value!

3 - Own It!...

Your own web site, that is. Your own web site
and domain name shows that you are serious about

your music and also gives you control over the
content and stats generated by your visitors.

You create equity for yourself when you add content
to your own web site which is not the case when
you add content to social networking sites.

Social networking sites do however offer you a
potential source of visitors to your web site.
Your strategy should be to direct visitors from
outside web sites like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter
and others to your own web site. So...

... use the social networks to add to the value
of your own business, not build the business of
the social networks.

Conclusion...

You need to be present and update often on the
major social networks and other genre-specific
networks.

People talk about things which they enjoy and
find valuable. People share music they like. So...

... create and deliver value to people on your
web site and with your presence and you'll receive
value in return.

Your music marketing will be most effective when
you have your own web site to which you can funnel
visitors from social networks and other outside
web sites.
About
the Author:

Marius van Dyk is a renegade musician, producer,
entrepreneur and independent music and web business
helper-elf. One person's definition of an indie band may be vastly different to another person's opinion so if you are trying to describe a song or band, it could be worthwhile being able to use more expressive terms.

Have a look at the following genres and think about how many you recognize or can spot: Shoegazing, Britpop,Grunge, Noise rock, Lo fi, Indie pop, Math rock, Garage rock, Post rock, New Wave of New Wave, Post Punk Revival, Nu-Rave, Folk rock.

And if you were so inclined you could probably list many more. Are these genres genuine or have they been created by magazine editors in order to create a buzz and help some more copies of their publications?

Historical Terms are Easily DefinableThere is no doubt that some terms are used to define an era or particular style, with Shoegazing, Britpop and Grunge being largely historical terms now but you will have an idea in your head of what this genre is like. Some of the more recent names are a lot more confusing and harder to place which sort of makes the genre pointless.

The idea of a "scene" or "genre" is to ensure that bands are easily identifiable and can be pinpointed quickly. If you like one band who plays a particular style of music then there is every chance you will like a band that plays a similar sort of music. An example of this would be the crossover between fans of The Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev. Some bands can gain a lot of new fans and publicity from being linked to a style of music with many other bands.

Bands Want to be Seen as IndividualsYou will find that many bands are not happy at being pigeonholed into one particular style or genre. When you think about it, it is not a compliment to have your entire musical output summed up in a couple of words. Every band would hope that they have some originality and that they are not instantly recognizable to many other acts.
There are strong commercial reasons to allow your music to be defined with a few easy definitions.

It may open up support slots or festival appearances alongside other bands that play a particular style.

It may allow your music to be placed in record stores / online stores alongside other similar bands ensuring you can tap into other groups fan bases.

It will make it easier for magazines and online sites to write about a band if there are easy points of references to be made.

There are Commercial Reasons for GenresAll of these reasons would appeal to a manager as they would increase the chances of a band being recognized by more consumers which should lead to the possibility of more sales. Deep down performing music should be about the love of the art and doing something worthwhile but bills will always have to be paid and bands need to earn money to stay alive.

It may go against your purist beliefs for being in a band and making music but creating noticeable links between yourself and other acts may generate awareness in your act that could not have been created elsewhere.

About the Author:
Ian Dougherty is a freelance music writer from the UK. It is unfortunate that it may take years to get a record deal, even if you're awesome! And in the independent music world, it still takes hard work to succeed, even with the increased amount of opportunities for this group. The moral of the story is, "don't put all your eggs in one basket." Basically, you have to really know your stuff, network with music contacts and know your goals. You don't want to end blending in with the rest of the music industry hopefuls that don't succeed.

Let's be honest, we all know that too many demos and press kits end up in the trash. So, try stepping away from the idea of a record deal being your only way to success. The music industry is moving out of the traditional brick and mortar and into the digital realm. Independent music artists are finding more and more ways to get there music out of their sheds and into everyone's iPod. Up and coming artists looking for play time will get their name out there not by sending out hundreds of demos, but by getting their face and name on the web, getting their music played for the people who will listen, and building up a huge fan base.

When you have been at it for years or if you are just starting out, forget fame and fortune for a second, and get down the basics of the music industry:

1. Literally, you have got to know your stuff:

If you're truly devoted to making it in the music industry, then be committed to your music first. Practice and master your craft because we all know there is always room for improvement. This is the most practical yet significant recommendation you'll ever get. If you want to make a lasting impact and develop a steady, long term music industry career you should take the time to develop your own distinctive sound. Whether it's your voice or your piano, you should be unsurpassed at what you do. Only hard work and devotion will get you there.

2. Be Seen!

The key is to build a fan base and the only way to do that is to play live! Don't be a snob about it either. Play anywhere and everywhere you can. Broadcast your performance schedule on your website, in local papers or through your friends and family. Music contacts in the music industry are obtained at performances and gigs.

In addition to playing live, you have to get your music heard. The radio, Internet radio, on your website, MP3s, ringtones, podcasts and web videos are all usable outlets. Take advantage of all the options out there available to independent music artists.

3. Lastly, Be Available.

Four out of five times, the first thing people do when. Find a way to connect to your website visitors. Tell stories, blog, put up pictures, schedules, freebies and anything else you can think of. Talk about what your music means or where you derive inspiration.

The bottom line really whether or not you have talent and are marketable in the music industry. Next, you have to put the time and effort into actually marketing your independent music to fans, music contacts and to anyone else who will listen. Take the time and put in the extra effort and success will come your way!
About the Author:

Owner of Platinum Millennium publishing, former record label owner & national music industry seminar speaker/panelist. A couple of years ago Indie bands played in garages, family functions, and cafes. They cut CDs and sent them to music giants in the hope they will be noticed.

The Internet and MP3s has brought about many changes in the affluence of independent music artists. The distribution system and marketing opportunities have changed. New media formats and many individual websites popped up and the reach of independent music became world wide. Gone were city boundaries or traveling on the road to spread awareness in the music industry and beyond. With the click of a mouse, popularity would dramatically increase.

However it is not all about success after the initial boom, several music sites and bands failed anyway. What every band with a dream of platinum albums and a plethora of weath must do is:

-Complete a study of their options.

-Create a marketing plan and constantly develop it and stick to it.

-When in doubt of their next move, talk to music contacts and mentors within the music industry.

Marketing online is all about promoting creatively:

-Be realistic and don't expect profits overnight. You need to popularize your independent music by possibly sending it out as a freebie. Place MP3s and videos on your site. When someone downloads a song and listens to it, they hopefully will play it over and over. This increases the likelihood of them wanting to hear your next song.

-Make sure you music is easily identified as yours no matter where it is posted.

-Categorize your music into the correct genre.

-Take advantage of popular music sites to distribute your music. People who love music scour these sites.

-Make your band's mark in stone. Get a website, purchase a domain name, use a reliable host and learn how to use SEO it so that it ranks high in the search engines. Educate yourself on the construction and proper use of a website. The old saying, "if you build it, they will come," does not apply here.

-Make your site interactive. You can do this by posting a blog, reviewing other music or introducing the band members. Make the site appealing so that guests are persuaded to look through and listen to your music.

-Explore other blogs and music forums to meet music contacts and increase your own popularity.

-Last is developing ways to generate funds, profits! Selling your music and merchandise is just the beginning. My reason is partly because of a challenge I took on at a young age, to take what I was told was an unmarketable instrument, the violin, and create music that expressed emotions, touched hearts, and ultimately, sold. Whatever the reason for creating their own labels, musicians sometimes forget the advantages they hold and focus instead on the multitude of challenges.

As a gentle reminder to artists as well as their potential customers, I'm sharing my personal favorite reasons why I enjoy having my own label, and why music lovers should consciously choose to buy music from independent labels.

1. Independent musicians can freely express their passion and unique talent. They can express their own personal stories, follow their own instincts, and not have to follow orders from major label executives as to what they must create. From the customer's perspective, by exploring radio stations and other sources of independent music, they too are now free to make their own decisions as to what is hot and what is not.

2. Many of the common music distributors only offer music from major labels, and rarely do they give anything for free, no matter how many albums you download or cds you buy. An independent artist is free to be unique and generous in his sales methods. For the consumer, this can mean getting bulk discounts, coupon offers and appreciation for their repeat purchases.

3. The independent musician can communicate directly with the customer, so online sales doesn't have to feel like an isolating experience for the artist. Many times the thrill of receiving an email directly from the musician can turn an independent label music purchaser into a devout fan.

4. Niche marketing is all the buzz these days, and nowhere is it more successful than in independent music. As an independent musician, you are free to create your own unique niche and, in the process, reach more ideal fans. As someone who buys music from an independent label, you can find it easier to discover the music that defines and expresses YOU as well.

5. By buying from independent labels, customers and musicians can share the love. Think of it this way, here's one scenario. A music lover makes a purchase. The independent musician has total control over what is communicated in the thank-you message. The customer can write back. The musician can quote the customer in his blog, the customer basks in the glory of the personal mention and shares it with all his friends on his Facebook page. Backlinks abound. Try that when you purchase from a major label.

6. Everyone feels more authentic. A MySpace page is more authentic than a billboard. A blog is more authentic than a press release. As an independent musician you can replace corporate communications with the real you, and your fans can comment on your webpage and get a direct response from you with their name on it.

7. At a time when many music retailers are closing their doors, customers can find their favorite independent musician's music by buying it directly from the artist. Musicians with a well defined niche and loyal, avid fans can remain untouched by the ups and downs of the retail music industry.

8. An independent musician can develop his own website presence based on his own unique personality and style. Fans can hang out in a place where they can listen to new music clips, socialize, watch video performances, buy music, and share and build upon each other's excitement. Everything is in one place, and they can discover a new musician or song, leave their comments, bookmark the site, make a purchase, and make new friends, all at the same time.

9. Musicians get a bigger cut from the sale of their music. This may seem obvious, but if customers could see the portions their favorite musicians receive from major labels, they would make more effort to support independent musicians, and buy from independent labels.

10.Indie musicians can band together to support each other and further their own causes, in organizations such as Association of Independent Musicians, or Rock the Net, only two examples. Major record labels often limit what their artists can do or not do. Consumers can not only support the music they love, they can affiliate themselves with causes they believe in.

There are of course other reasons to buy music from independent artists, but this is a great list to get you started thinking in that direction.

About the Author:

Daniel Kobialka played Principal Second Violin with the San Francisco Symphony for decades, and has his own record label, LiSem Enterprises Inc. Gone are the days where musicians and artists have to rely solely on record deals to make the big bucks. With the rise of online music promotion on the Internet, the possibilities are literally limitless.

One of the most effective ways to market yourself and your music is through a website. But, the trick is driving traffic to that site. Fortunately, through the use of search engine optimization, this is not an impossible music promotion idea. Using keywords and title tags throughout your site will definitely help you achieve these results. Get your link out there. Post it on your MySpace page, your friend's pages and exchange with other bands.

Another way to achieve this is by placing your music for sale on sites that cater to independent artists trying to maximize their online music promotion exposure. These sites list your CDs for sale and end up giving you a pretty fat chunk of the profits. This is a relatively new music promotion idea but quite a few artists are reaping the benefits. Remember, this is in addition to offering your music for sale on your site.

When making your CDs, include a barcode on the package. This way, you can offer local music stores the opportunity to sell your album. Local music stores tend to be particularly favorable to Indie musicians from their area. Independent music promotion doesn't have to be difficult, you just need creativity and the drive to succeed.

You should also look into getting a MySpace page. MySpace music is a powerful tool for unsigned artists and independent music promotion. You gain maximum exposure and it will cost you absolutely nothing at all. You can't beat that!

Include your web address on every piece of material that goes out. This will ensure people get the word about your site. Your website will be your connection to the world around you. Keep it current and up to date, no matter what. Keep it interesting and constantly changing. No one wants to constantly visit a monotonous site.

Independent music promotion has been proven a successful path for artists to take. If your ultimate goal is to get signed then will hard work and dedication it will happen. Implement the above techniques into your online music promotion routine and you will be on the track to raking in profits and hopefully fame and fortune! Keep in mind that you are always learning. Don't be afraid to seek help for problem areas but most importantly, stay positive!
About the Author:

Former owner of an independent label, owner of Platinum Millennium Pub. & music industry seminar speaker/panelist. Well, whether that is a stereotype or completely true, it does not matter because it is not a sell-out, at all! If you are an Indie musician who wants to taking an anti-corporate stance or huge labels in general leave a bad taste in your mouth you can still market in the music industry with out being left with the feeling of selling out. There are other music contacts to be made and other ways of getting your music heard with out going corporate.

The fact is, there are ways to build your fan base and amplify people's interest your independent music - without selling out. If you are an independent music maker, here are a few ways you can do some marketing without selling out to the music industry.

First, you need to put aside your anti-marketing frame of mind and think about what is best for your career in the music industry. Finding ways to reveal your ideas and creations through your sound to more people, which in turn is essentially marketing shows that you believe in what you are creating.

Doesn't the music you develop deserve to be heard around the world? Of course you think that way unless you only want to play for yourself. Marketing does not have to be a negative word. There are ways to market and advertise your music without "selling out" as independent music artist.

Think of your fans, they are your best promoters and marketers! Marketing isn't all about dealing with media and big corporations. If you're not comfortable with dealing with those people, forget about them and focus on your fan base. Have you considered provided them with ways to "spread the word." They may already be doing just this for you. Fans probably already market for you and they will be your most passionate music contacts and promoters.

So now, you just must increase your fan base's size and your marketing will increase. See, this is done without the use of those outlets you may despise. What is better than that? What do your fans love about your music? Once you know this, it becomes even easier to find more prospective fans that would also be interested in your music and your message.

Independent music marketing does not have to be corporate nor selling out, now does it? You are sharing what you love with those who love what you do. Use this concept to your advantage. The music industry is all about money and there is money to be made. Take a little piece of the pie without feeling like you are turning your back on your beliefs.
About the Author:

Owner of Platinum Millennium publishing, former record label owner & national music industry seminar speaker/panelist. The new deal with Amazon.com makes them a new competitor against iTunes and Napster.

After signing a deal with the 4 major labels (Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group, EMI Music, and Warner Music Group, Inc.) MySpace and its business partners could benefit from the indie artists, but will they return the benefits?

You can always say that yes, an indie artist being featured next to a signed artist could help their exposure. But does the artist gain the same amount of benefits as the major label?

1. The independent artist doesn't see a fixed amount of money coming in from the on-site advertising deals that MySpace creates, because of MySpace Music.

2. The indie artist has to count on, whoever checks out their page, actually listens to their music, instead of it being forced into their ears by consistent radio airplay.

3. Ever since the News Corp. buy-out, the social network has been geared toward mainstream music. As of today, I only see 1 independent artist featured next to a whole page of mainstream artists.

Is that really helping independent music out?

MySpace is not an artist's, or band's website. News Corp. can one day say, "Let's get rid of these pages." The page is owned by them, not the artist who put so much work into maintaining the page.

This type of deal should really send a message to an indie band, or artist, which is, "I should have my own website." The artist is free to post/sell their music, merchandise, and what ever they have to market themselves, and it can not be taken away.

Yes, MySpace is a free outlet, but there is a price to pay if you do not go by their standards. It is a great marketing tool, but that is it. All the friends, music, and layouts that an indie artist has worked to get can all be gone one day.
About the Author:

Noe Pacheco is the Editor @ Gighive.com.

http://www.gighive.com/

http://www.kafesol.com/

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/music-articles/myspace-music-ignores-independent-music-598086.html
